Chicago Windows DIY Installation
If you have some construction or remodeling experience, installing replacement windows in your Chicago home is a project that may be worth doing yourself. Whether you are looking for increased energy efficiency or simply want to update the aesthetic of your home, new windows can have a big impact on the look and comfort of your home.
DIY Chicago Window Replacement
You may be a seasoned DIYer or installing your replacement windows in Chicago for the first time. Either way, follow these steps to ensure proper window installation:
- Using a pry bar, carefully remove and save the exterior and interior trim pieces around the existing windows. Be careful not to damage the surround drywall or siding. Measure and record the window openings.
- Order your replacement windows from a Chicago windows showroom or building center. There are many different types and styles of replacement windows to choose from, so do some research to find out which windows are right for your specific situation.
- When the replacement windows are on site, remove one of the old windows (from the outside) by first extracting any nails holding it in place.
- Install the new window in the center of the existing opening. Most replacement windows are built ready-to-install, using an integral nailing flange that will hold the window in place and act as a continuous flashing around the perimeter of the window frame. Be sure to apply a bead of silicone caulk to the underside of the flange before nailing the window in place.
- Insulate the space around the new window. Manufacturers build windows slightly smaller than the measured opening so that they can be installed easily. Using a can of low expanding foam, seal the space around the window to ensure a weathertight fit.
- Replace the saved trim pieces on both the interior and exterior sides of the house.
Remember to do your research, work carefully, and follow the manufacturer's installation guidelines. Your new Chicago windows should help you save money and energy in Chicago's climate of extreme temperatures.
